On Tuesday, October 13, at 10 am, a large white Veterans Administration bus arrived at the Custer County Medical Center. After more than two years working with the Veteran’s Administration, Custer County is now participating in the Mobile Veterans’ Center program.
The Center brings to Westcliffe services that previously required a 60-mile (or more) drive to a VA Medical facility for counseling and readjustment services. The Center will provide Veteran’s individual counseling, group counseling, marital/family counseling, alcohol/drug assessment and referrals or counseling, spouse counseling, benefits assistance, employment counseling, community education, liaison with VA facilities and sexual trauma counseling.
This Mobile Center is scheduled to be in Westcliffe twice a month. The schedule is 10am to 2pm, on 27 October, 12 November, 3 & 17 December, 7 and 21 January, 4 & 18 February, 4 & 18 March, 1 & 15 April.
During the winter months the Custer County Medical Center will provide office and counseling space. During the more mild months of the year the Center will take appointments in their well-furnished bus.
The Center will take walk-in Veteran patients but prefers Veterans call for an appointment at 719-339-7038.
Locally, Lorraine Silva, Custer County Service Office at 783-9470, can answer questions about the program.
